Multi-factor authentication (MFA) is a new security feature that will required on PAWS for UWM students. It was first introduced last semester, and it has increased the safety of online accounts. The new security feature requires multiple authentication methods, including a password and a device. Students who have not already enrolled in MFA will prompted to do so when they log in the next time.

The University of Wisconsin – Whitewater has implemented this measure for critical access to certain systems and for access to sensitive data. This is based on its Information Asset Classification Policy, which defines what data is considered high-risk. UW – Whitewater currently utilizes a one-time password authentication (OTP) system that requires the user to provide a one-time password. This password is generate by an approved hardware token or smartphone application. Depending on the data protect, only employees who need access to this data will be granted access. Employees may also be subject to revocation of system access if they violate the policies.

The multi-factor authentication (MFA) system requires users to select either a hardware token (fob) or a smartphone application for their OTP authentication devices. The UW System will monitor the usage of these devices and issue reports to the user’s supervisor when necessary.

The UWM PAWS system is a student-focused system that uses a computer program to help students and faculty review their grades. The system is open between the hours of 6:00 a.m. and 12:00 a.m. (CDT).
